OK, so who is the asshat this time?

http://spokane.craigslist.org/pet/875538571.html

Springdale, Washington - located up Springdale-Hunters Hwy off of Allen Rd?

Who is this person and how is she getting all of these Thoroughbreds? Hoarder, or breeder gone bad?

The person who posted this ad has made a start, by contacting the authorities and the media. I hope that if the country sheriff gets enough complaints, they might DO something.

If 20+ horses died last winter, the situation has to be taken seriously, surely.

Horrible, that horse is a skeleton... I hope they do something before winter, I don't think the animal pictured would make it through.

Sounds like the local authorities should close her down for good. She needs to be stopped if she is indeed starving all the TBs. What I am wondering is WHERE is she getting all these horses and WHO keeps selling her all these OTTBs in the first place? Sound very suspicious to me!

Ive got about 40-45 horses back home in kansas that need good homes. They are all very well bred and well built. They are not registered but could be. They are all bred for cutting but would make great ranch horses or whatever else. All but 2 of them are not broke but are very friendly and wouldn't take much to break. We've had theses horses for a long time and with the marking being the way it is they need to go. If you have any questions or ideas or are interested please call me at (620) 727-0142 or e-mail me at all4dhorses@yahoo.com The pics I have attached are just a few of them. I can send more pics if you would like just ask. Thank You "

Local midwest sale barn on Friday - no bids on many horses....2 yr olds started under saddle with $20 bids.

The guy running the sale said at a different sale barn, a couple of hours from here had MANY go through without bids. After the sale was over, and everyone was gone - approx. 80 horses stood on the property...the owners just abandoned them. Many were euthanized I guess. It's getting scary out there. If this is happening now, when there is still pasture out there, I can't imagine what's going to happen when the pasture is gone.

Thank Heavens someone is trying to do something about it. I was tempted to call myself, and I live on the east coast! Then again we have things like this going on here http://tinyurl.com/52833g. Anyone want some TWH's? Talk about back yard horses!

Wow, I never knew it would reach Fugly! There are so many twists and turns to this story as I dig deeper and it makes me want to cry! I have cried a lot over the last few days sinse I first found them and took the pictures. I have more and they all make you cry! The horses are so sweet and want to be loved. I was told by an insider that she reported 2 times last winter before 24 horses died on that property and then again after they died and still nothing happened. She called it in two years ago and nothing has happened all this time. This woman may have connections with a known animal rescue organization according to her own words to the person who helped me find them. The large herd of TB's were given to her by whom we do not know or where they disappeared to we do not know, but the horse you have pictured here is a stallion. There is a total of 23-24 horses on the place that we counted with most in fair condition but the 3 being the worst and the only ones we can report on at this time. Thank you for posting about it! the more we let people know, maybe something will happen.

The posting reports a threat to shoot the horses rather than give them away. This might be a hoarder, or might be a breeder refusing to admit failure and take a loss (because breeding horses is terribly lucrative, dontcha know), at this point it doesn't really matter. They're unhinged at some level, and the end result is a bunch of horses starving to death.

Blegh. I hope the Craig's List post is a severe exaggeration or someone with a vendetta, and the horses are actually quite well cared for. I'm not holding my breath for it, though.

I found the following on a random forum and felt that it needed to be mentioned here...

"has currently had 3 foals and this is her fourth! i just can't believe my Girl has another baby *jumps around*"

The first response?

"What colour is the filly/colt?"

KOLOURKOLOURKOLOUR.

Who cares that she's downhill, ewe-necked, goose-rumped and shoulderless with awful hooves and a serious case of worms - when she'll make purdy koloured babies?

Very sad, those poor horses. I hope that this person gets banned from keeping them in the future and that the ban is then properly enforced which doesnt always seem to happen

OT: Prevention

I board at a stable in Rolla, MO. Recently, we got two new horses, a yearling gelding, and a pregnant mare. Their owners live in Kansas City... or a four hour drive away.

Yesterday, they decided that the board was too expensive and that they were moving their horses to their property in Edgar Springs (which is the next town south of Rolla). They've fenced off a half-an-acre lot for both of them.

They have NOT made arrangements, as far as anyone knows, for the horses to be fed or watered.

Also, the mare is due in January and there is no barn or shelter on the property.

What can I do?

Texomam-
That horse you listed from dreamhorse--did you see the other horse that seller is listing? Definitely sad. The other horse has to go because she needs Sr. feed and her weight keeps fluctuating. Since they have ten other horses, they can't afford to keep her. Yeah, use her for lessons and foals, and "find her a good, loving home" when you're done with her. Why not BE that loving home. Find a home for another of the ten, that has a chance. Gak.

Ahhhh!!!! I KNOW this farm. They are 30 minutes from my house. I called the sheriffs office on them this summer when I drove by on my way to camp at Hunters, Wa

Is this photo recent?

Dammit!!

You know when I called they basically told me that there was little to nothing that could be done. Stevens County has nothing in the way of Animal Control or a Humane Society or anything really it is a poor county and animals aren't really on the priority list. Horses are still Livestock and not pets. (not my opinion - theirs)

If this is the farm I am thinking of you should see the rest of their horses! I believe the "horse is old" excuse was in play this time. Sounded like I was not the first caller.

The folks to direct your emails to would be the Stevens County Sheriffs Office - I believe their department has an email address.

Let me look.

Stephanie said...

Tried searching another way still no email to the sheriff's office.

There are only two animal rescue groups in Stevens County, Wa that I am aware of and they all are SMALL Animals only groups.

The groups in Spokane County won't help unless they authorities order it - because its not in their county. I already tried that.

So I don't know who she has contacts with and/or with what group??

This maybe be another case of the authorities not wanting to deal with the problem because they really don't know what to do, or how to do it.

Just guessing here....

Sorry about the typo's.... I can type really - just not on Monday

If someone could give me the name of the farm I may know who this person is in Springdale. There are not too many people up there that have that many TB horses .

Stephanie said...

There aren't that many people who have TB horses in all of Stevens County.

Didn't even know they were TB horses when i called them in this summer. Thought they were skinny Arabs or QH Arab crosses. Cause that's what you usually see up there - hold outs from the 80's, folks who loaded up on Arabians and now no longer want them and can't even give the freaky little things away...

Sorry don't know the farm name either, I can maybe drive by tonight and see if there is a sign or something...if I recall correctly there isn't one but I can check...

I read this blog almost on a daily basis and do not post but I feel that I must have my say about this situation. I know this woman because she is my neighbor.

This woman's name is Carol. She lives about three miles up the road from a legit equine rescue, The Shepherds Way Animal Rescue, where I volunteer most of my days and help with their horses.

Due to the influx of abused and starved horses, this rescue should not take any more horses. (That's my opinion). They already have 36 horses and have enough hay for the winter for those horses. They have rehabilitated all but four horses and last week adopted out three horses so they offered to take three of Carol's horses. Carol is not willing to part with any of HER horses. The Shepherds Way Animal Rescue adopted out 33 horses this year.

Our hearts are breaking to see the damage that Carol is doing to those horses.

The rescue's owner already holds two jobs to support the rescue and the wife will have to get a second job if they take all of those horses, just to pay for the hay and grain but they are willing to do it to save the horses.

Make Carol get a job...(no, she does not work). The Rescue's Vet is willing to do a free farm call and examine the horses if Carol relents and finally allows the rescue take on the responsibility.

At this point, Carol wants the rescue to foot the bill for the care, rehab and groceries of the horses and she retain ownership. What's wrong with this picture? These people pay for most of their horses care out of pocket. Very seldom will you see or hear of them ask for help, and they are a 501(c)3.

We live two miles from Carol but do not have the finances to support horses. This woman must be stopped. The rescue that I volunteer at does a good work but can only do so much. Carol must be forced to take her own responsibility and care for those animals. (You should see her dogs and cats). We are doing what we can to get the word out but Stevens County will do NOTHING without a great deal of pressure. It makes me sick.

Carol gets her horses from the auction and tries to claim the status of rescue, doing nothing with the horses (literally). She has no heart and thinks that what you see in the photographs are healthy horses and normal.

If you want to help save the horses, put pressure on the local sheriff's department.

They need a great deal of medical attention and ALOT of groceries.

Thank you for letting me vent.

Stephanie--

The place you are talking about is a legit rescue. The few skinny horses that you see are new horses that have arrived are in quarenteen and getting the groceries and medical attention they deserve. Before you make accusation, stop in and see for yourself.

The Sheriff's department comes to the place several times a month on the request of the rescue to document the progress of the horses.

equineshepherdess said...

I stand corrected, Stephanie. I did not see your recent post. The address and phone number you just gave is the place where Carol lives and has the horses.

The rescue that you see on the way to Hunters is on Springdale-Hunters Road and is a legit rescue.

night_mare said...

equineshepherdess :

I know who the legit rescuer who is trying to save those horses and they are the most generous & kind people . I know they are strapped but still feed & care about their horses & all animals that cross their path. What sickens me is Carol, the callous ignorant woman , to say the least, that has these poor horses. She is shameless and asinine, Stevens county is pathetic to say the least and most of Springdale is Indian reservation as well so that also puts a cabosh on action in some of the area too. The only action is the media, they seem to reach the most people & their hearts.

mdmossburg said...

I am also one who has been reporting this woman for over two years to the media (don't care too far away) and the sheriff in Stevens County (no animal control and small, poor county so they do nothing) and I am the one who kept reporting all day yesterday on Spokane Craig's List to get some more attention.

This has gone on for years and folks do not really care for horses which are considered property in this state and only a misdomeanor in this state so a slap on the wrist if they actually do something to help us when we report the horse hoarders. The do not do jail time even when killing animals in Washington state due to overcrowded jails and prisons.

I also rescue dogs in the Spokane area so I deal with my share of animal hoarders and puppy mill breeders. I work often to close them down. I also train and breed a couple of foal each year so I work at home and take the time to ferret out the worst of the worst or a lot of law enforcement in my family so i hear of them that way.

If I could get this gal closed down I would jump for joy. But it took three years to close down a fake horse rescue here so I am not holding my breath to save these horses unless some print or electronic media such as FUGLY haunts here too.

I was asked to not post her name or address yet but the other folks working with me on this problem. I will when the time is right and let the planet know after we gather enough evidence for the DA we are working with too, we hope. They rarely commit to being helpful for animals when there are people crimes they should pursue. Plus working with a detective who has worked on other animal hoarding cases in the county.

So we are reporting and letting folks know to keep watch and report what you see too in your own area.

equineshepherdess said...

MDMossburg:

Maybe we can all pool our resources and get this person closed down. Who is the detective in the area? We may be able to help. At least try.

Okay - Number I wasn't reporting or posting the rescue - I am aware of the rescue (although I thought it was an inactive "sanctuary" not an active "rescue") but either way I was reporting "Carol's horses" not the "rescue" horses.

And I didn't send this report to Fugs...

AND LASTLY you don't just stop by someone's house in rural Stevens County to tell them their horses are too skinny unless you want a gun in your face. So no, I am not going to "stop in and see for myself" unless i am accompanied by a sheriff.

When I called I was very specific about which place it was - spoke briefly to dispatch, got the whole "they are old horses" song and dance and we know but "we can't really do anything....blah, blah, blah...."

Gosh dang - people, guess that's what I get for putting my two cents in.

equineshepherdess said...

Stephanie--

No offense was meant in the posts. At this rescue, we don't mind if folks stop in and inquire about the horses with or without the sheriff. No offense was meant by asking you to stop in or any of the wording of the post. I apologize if you took it offensively.

I got the same song and dance from dispatch when I called. When I contacted the Rescue attorney to see what we could do, he suggested putting pressure on the DA. We'll still get a song and dance, but enough calls will warrant the DA to order the Sheriff's Department to do something. It could work.

Stephanie said...

I called again today just after I saw Fugs post.

I guess I just put it out of my mind and hoped the Sheriff's office would take care of it.

Been sick and hurt the all late summer and fall so I haven't been anywhere near there to check on it situation.

The D.A. huh? Well I guess - we can try. I get so tired of trying to get those guys to see horses as anything more than fancy looking cows, let alone convince them that they have a..gasp..."right" to a healthy pain free life.

Stephanie said...

Isn't one of the main symptoms of hoarding...the delusion that everything is normal with them?

If she is a hoarder that maybe why she thinks her horses look fine.

Mannnnn...I still can't type - giving up for today. If you need to get a hold of me you can email me through my blog I'm willing to help out in whatever way I can...

I just spoke to KHQ news team. They stopped by the Rescue to ask some questions. From what we understand, they will be doing a blurp on the situation tonight on the news and depending on the response, they will do a complete story.

Their phone number is:509-448-6000 Talk to the newsroom.

kkstoop said...

It is very sad. We finally got them to respond to the horses that were locked up in a garage, shop, barn thing. One of the horses did die before we could get it out but we now have 3 of the 4 remaining horses out and she is willing to release the last if we can find a home for it.
A local appy lady helped and after no response from our emails, she placed a phone call and got a response. The responding sherrif said that they had many, many horse related calls including loose horses that are unclaimed.
Hopefully, we can get something happening soon!!!!

kkstoop said...

I do need to say that the horses we got out were from a different place, still in Stevens County.
Interestingly enough, she also thought her horses were not in bad shape.

I see the old neighborhood hasn't changed a lot over 20 years. It's a totally different mindset up there, and winters are HARD! One of the coldest place in Washington.

I once rescued a horse so horrible the Vet said he would have lived (maybe) two weeks. He shined up just fine with six months of good food/care/meds.

Thanks Stephanie & others for doing what you can. Wish I was there to help.

I talked to my neighbor, who talked briefly with Carol (the one who has the very very skinny thoroughbreds) My neighbor said she thought all the horses but the two seemed to look OK, but the other two were pretty thin. I saw the two thin horses myself, up close and personal and they are grossly thin. They will not make the winter up there. They are not OLD! My neighbor said Carol told her they are only 12 and 14 years old!

We are getting these horses today. There are 7 total and have temporary homes for them. I will post photos this weekend of how bad the two thoroughbred mares are. They are papered, but it doesn't sound like the owner is going to give them up. Any help or some permanent homes for these horses would be greatly appreciated. The Stevens county Sheriff is going to be charging the woman with animal cruelty and some other charge. We are not sure what it is. Please email me for more info if anyone is interested in helping out or giving these horses a home. Shelley
